installing vista beta 1

Installing Vista Beta 1

I joined the Windows Vista beta testing and I noticed just today that you can actually download it yourself and install it. I did that using the File Transfer Manager.
File downloaded was a 2.5 big zip file that I extracted and burned into a DVD.
Problem is now that it doesnt boot ti the DVD when booting the computer. Am I doing something wrong?

Instead of burning it to a DVD, you can emulate the ISO image as a CD-ROM drive so that you can install it from that. I recomment using Daemon Tools: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5
However, if you have Nero, you can click on the DVD button and create a Bootable Data Disc. That should do it, but I'd personally recommend using Daemon Tools :o)

Avoid extracting or using virtual disk tools. Simply burn the ISO to a blank DVD. You can launch the installation from within an existing installation of Windows or boot of the DVD and install the OS to a dedicated partition. As Zack suggested, NERO, Roxio or freeware apps such as Clone DVD can burn isos to dvd's. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

Just as a thought though, what's the problem with using a virtual CD emulator? It works exactly the same and always works, the only difference is is that you don't have an actual DVD with it on in the end.
Still gets the job done :o)

I have heard a lot of people say, it fails or causes problems, use the normal method, which is from physical media. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

Pepe, it's an ISO image, so you need to use BurnCDCC or something else like that. Here's an URL to BurnCDCC, which works quite well. It has a delayed reaction, so be prepared to wait a bit before it starts its job.

Lots of suggestions about burning the ISO here, but I'll ask a more basic question. Assuming you burned the ISO correctly (as an ISO, not as a file), did you set the boot device sequence in your BIOS to look at your optical drive(s) first (or, at least, before your hard drive)?

Yes, you need to set the first boot device as one of your DVD drives so that Windows Vista can boot from the disk and start setup. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

For someone who just started with this beta, the other observation I would make is that you're wanting to scroll past the "Vista Beta 1" referenced in your message subject and look for either "Windows Build 5270 Main 32 bit DVD.iso" or "Windows Build 5270 Main 64 bit DVD.iso" in the download list (depending on whether you're testing the x86 or x64 version of the OS, respectively).
The downloads on connect.microsoft.com are sorted oldest to newest, and "Beta 1" is not the most recent build to be downloading and testing.
